Elizabeth Kane
The first surrogate birth occurred in the U.S. in 1976. In November of 1980 Elizabeth Kane (her real name is Mary Beth but she is not the same Mary Beth who was involved in the case of "baby M" discussed later) became the first legal surrogate mother in America. She later became active in the National Coalition Against Surrogacy (Kane [1988] [1989]).
