1942年11月17日生まれ、インド出身。ケンブリッジ大学フランク・ラムゼイ記念教授。資源・環境経済学、開発経済学における顕著な業績で有名。 1979年に出版されたHeal教授との共著Economic Theory and Exhaustible Resourcesは枯渇性資源を伴う経済を分析した古典的名著。 1974年のDasgupta, Sen, and Starrett、1979年のDasgupta, Hammond, and Maskin論文は各々、不平等測度、遂行理論における必読論文である。 1987年のRay教授との共著論文では、栄養失調と効率賃金仮説を組み合わせたモデルによって、途上国特有の労働市場の問題を 見事に分析した。近年は、従来の経済学で扱われてこなかった社会資本や環境の価値などの研究に精力的に取り組んでいる。 現代経済学における最も重要な研究者の一人といっても過言ではない。
