1. Topics and Contribution to the Global COE Program Ars Vivendi
(1)Topics, Objectives and Impacts
This project aims to clarify what kinds of employment problems those who have
difficulties working, such as young people or foreigners have and have unstable life, and
to discuss the political responses to them and background identities behind them.
Following the last year's same study group, this project aims to
research theoretically and practically on labour issues, unstable
living, and guaranteed income in today's society, including the
international research on these issues, and to build the network of
researchers on these issues. This project conducts research on current important challenges such as
labour, living, and security which have been seldom related to each
other, with multi-angled viewpoints. Also, the project is significant
in that it connects theories and practices.
(2)Contribution to the Global COE Program Ars Vivendi
Accumulating information on labour issues of young people or
foreigners, analyzing the effects of various policies to support
their lives, and to explore the possibilities of guaranteed income,
will contribute to 1 "Accumulation and Thinking", and 3 "Cooperation
and Construction" of Global COE Program Ars Vivendi's missions.
In practice, we will share our information on the website of this
project and organize seminars, etc.
2. Research Plan, Method and Publication of Research Products
Our research methods include; 1) conducting research on labour issues
especially those of young people or foreigners and collect information on
their current situation or actual practice in their work through
interviews and so on; 2) analyzing how the policies such as
minimum wage, tax deduction or supplemental security income influence
on people with unstable living through examination of literature or
government publication materials; and 3) critically considering the human
capital theory in relation to workfare, and exploring the
possibilities of income securities including basic income. The
project members will conduct research according to their own study field, and
the project has seminars and discussions. We will
invite researchers or activists in related fields as appropriate if necessary.
We had study groups on June 12, July 13, September 24, November 6 and will have study groups
in early January and March.
Concerning the output of achievements of our project, we have already made presentations at Japan Welfare
Sociology Association, and published books (eg. VOL lexicon and Repairing the Tax) etc.
Moreover, we will make presentaions at Society for the Study of Social Policy, publish books and publish Report Issued by Research Center for
Ars Vivendi titled "International Studies on labour Issues, Unstable
Living, and Guaranteed Income (tentative)".

1. Topics and Contribution to the Global COE Program Ars Vivendi
(1)Topics, Objectives and Impacts
The project aims to conduct research internationally on labour issues,
guaranteed income, and unstable living in today's society with
theoretical and practical bases. It also aims to establish the mutual
network among researchers on these issues domestically and
internationally. Our main activities will include inviting speakers on
labour issues, guaranteed income, and unstable living , and having study groups. Especially, we plan to hold a
research symposium with Maurizio Lazzarato of Multitudes. We
believe this project can contribute to successive development of
international research on the above three issues.
(2)Contribution to the Global COE Program Ars Vivendi
The project aims to conduct research internationally on labour issues,
guaranteed income, and unstable living in today's society with
theoretical and practical bases. The Global COE Program Ars Vivendi has accumulated
a certain amount of domestic research of the related fields, but we
believe we need more international research and exchanges.
Especially, we expect great contribution by asking Mr. Lazzarato to
introduce dramatical movement of CIP-idf, the cooperative of
labourers and people with unstable living in Ile-de-France. In
addition, the comparative studies on similar practices in Japan and
achievements on exchanges will be important in the near future, and we
expect these can contribute to the Global COE Program Ars Vivendi.
2. Research Plan, Method and Publication of Research Products
Research Plan
We invite Mr. Maurizio Lazzarato, who has developed radical theories on
labour, guaranteed income and unstable living, for a week in June. At
the same time, we invite domestic researchers, artists, care
workers, and activists on temporary workers as lecturers and have
research symposium with Mr. Lazzarato. In addition, we plan to
hold regular study groups throughout the year.
Research Methods
Since the topic of this project involves variety of academic fields, we
approach the issues from many different angles, as we take advantage
of research and methods project members have in the fields such as
philosophy and social thoughts, women labour, labour union studies,
discrimination studies, and literature and representation studies. We
also study its related literature both inside and outside of Japan, conduct
field work or qualitative surveys, and so on. We will publish and
share our achievements through study groups.
Output of Research Achievements
We will publish our research achievements through reports, papers and research
notes by our project members. We aim to translate Lazzarato's
presentation paper, and publish in Core Ethics and/or Center
Report.
