の開発の促進に繋がるものと期待されています。
本号には、上記論文の他、環境、化学、生化学、医学分野から計４本の日本からの論
文が掲載されています。１週に合計５本の論文が同時に掲載されるのは、昨年８月２
６日号以来２度目のことで日本の研究が様々分野でますます注目を浴びていることの
表れです。

This historic issue contains the Human Genome Project's latest success, the
sequencing of human Chromosome 21. Lead by Professor Sakaki of the RIKEN
Genomic Sciences Center, the Japanese-German team responsible includes
RIKEN and Keio University. Chromosome 21 contains the genes responsible for
illnesses including Alzheimer's, Down's Syndrome, epilepsy, and leukemia,
so its sequencing should open the gates to great advances in understanding
and finding cures for these devastating conditions.
