◆概要
手話（しゅわ）とは、手指動作と非手指動作(NMS, non-manual signals)を同時に使う視覚言語で、音声言語と並ぶ言語である。
手話は音声言語のもつ特性がない、ジェスチャーであるので、言語ではない、劣ったコミュニケーションであるという誤解があった。しかし、1960年に米国のウィリアム・ストーキー氏(「Sign Language Structure: An Outline of the Visual Communication Systems of the American Deaf」）が言語学研究の方法から、手話の構造を見つけ、手話は言語であると示した。
