T he genetics program is the largest research program within HHMI. Scientists in this program are searching for answers to how the information in DNA is regulated during development and throughout adult life. Their discoveries are leading to new methods for diagnosing, preventing, and treating hereditary diseases and are adding to the growing knowledge about the human genome. HHMI research teams have recently identified genes involved in cancer, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, mental retardation, hypertension, and many other illnesses. They also have experimented with novel approaches for diagnosing and correcting genetic defects.
