"[…]there is a certain kind of conservatism that manifests itself as xenophobia and discrimination but stems from a dissatisfaction on the part of its proponents with their own social standing in relation to those who have been more successful. The perspective explored in this book occupies a different position from that of the "pro-life" movement, in which religious conservatism has played a leading role, and does not side with a conservatism that takes a very simple (and political) approach to the questions of what is traditional and what is moral, but at the same time it is not a perspective that accepts without hesitation the vagueness and convenience to those who espouse it of the so-called "liberal" position. It was my intention in writing this book to clarify as much as possible what if any value these positions may have, but the task of laying out and examining the assertions of liberalism and conservatism and clarifying the ways in which they agree and disagree is one that remains to be carried out."
リバタリアンは、自由の立場から市場における自由（Ａ＋）と技術利用の自由（Ｂ＋）を主張する。保守主義は、伝統・道徳の立場から、市場における自由（Ａ＋）と表現等の規制（Ｂ−）を主張する（彼らにとって市場での自由主義は伝統的で道徳的なのである）。リベラルは、配分を求める（Ａ−）一方、自己決定の立場から自己決定を主張する（Ｂ＋）。【右に文献をあげたロリー・アンドリュースの「病院開示法案」の全文がInlander et al.［1988＝1997］にあり、連載の「「消費者主義」の本」と題する回（立岩［2001-2009(2)］）▽298 で紹介した。】おおまかに言ってこのような構図になっている。Ａ分配に関する政府の役割を巡って、リバタリアンは保守主義として現われ、リベラルと対立する。他方、Ｂ生命倫理等に関わる主題については、規制に反対するリベラル派があり「プロ・チョイス」の主張に同調し、リバタリアンは自由放任を一貫させるだろうが、宗教的保守派は政府による規制を求める（米国における主張の布置について佐々木毅［1984］等）。
リベラルとはどういう立場なのかが問題である。米国での生殖技術を巡る論議を見ていくと、少なくともいくつかの場面で、権利や選択を主張する側（リベラルということになるのかもしれない）がそれによって利益を得る側であり、また、そこで価値を付与される側にいること、つまり、彼ら（彼女ら）は求められる（特に知的な）能力を有している側にあり、「資格」のある側にいることを無視できないと感じる。同時に、ある種の保守主義は一方で排外主義、差別主義として現象するのだが、しかしそれ自体が、より成功している層との関係における自らの社会的な位置に対する不満に発している。本書に見出される立場は、宗教的保守派を主役とした生命擁護派（プロ・ライフ派）からは隔たったところにあり、何が伝統的であり道徳的であるのかという問いに対して随分と素朴である（と同時に政治的である）しかない保守主義に与するものではないが、同時に、リベラルという立場の曖昧さや（当の立場をとる人達にとっての）都合のよさをそのまま受け入れようとするものではない。これらのいずれでもないどのような価値があるのかは、本書でできる限り明らかにしたつもりだが、リベラリズム・保守主義といった主義・主張について調べ、検討し、それらとの異同を明らかにする作業は今後の課題として残される。
