彼の最大の誤りは，〔自殺をめぐる〕言語的カテゴリーが編成される道筋の未解決な本質に焦点を当てず，彼自身の研究課題として自殺やその類似行為のカテゴリー化にかんする事柄に取り組もうともせず，そればかりか彼が言及していることの不明瞭さをよりいっそう明確にしてしまうような〔「現世から来世への魂の移行」や「贖罪」としての「実体的自己の変容」といった〕一連の説明をあてがおうとしていること，であった.
ダグラスの自殺に対する“新しいアプローチ”は，彼自身が批判した社会学者たちの抱えていた問題点のいくつかも含むような，多くの重大な誤謬に巻き込まれてしまう傾向にある，と言わざるを得ない〔中略〕最も批判すべき点は，彼の研究プログラムがどのようにして経験的研究を遂行すべきか／どのような形式を執るべきかにかんする明瞭な方向性を与えてはくれないことだ（83; 〔〕内筆者加筆）．

1967年5月2日火曜日午後3時10分ごろ，J・F・S（59歳，炭坑従業員）がX町○×番地にある炭鉱内の小屋で首をつっている状態で発見された．
1966年9月，この自殺者は心臓病により3週間休職し，同年11月から気管支炎により5週間休職した．気管支炎を患って以降，彼は冬以降も炭坑での仕事を続けられるかどうかを心配し，そのために食欲をなくし，体重は減っていった．〔1967年〕5月2日火曜日午後1時，石炭を運ぶトラックを運転中，彼は交通事故に巻き込まれた．事故自体は大したことはなかったが，それからというもの彼は心配ばかりするようになり，抑うつの徴候が見られるようになった．
1967年5月4日木曜日午後2時ごろ，X町□◇番地の病院においてブート博士による司法解剖に立ち会い，死因は縊首によるものと確認した．
