Outline of the International Symposium Called "Research on Home Care of Patients with ALS in East Asia"

Global COE Program for Ars Vivendi at Ritsumeikan University in Japan is planning to organize the international symposium called "Research on Home Care of Patients with ALS in East Asia" in co-operation with Japan ALS Association on February 21, 2009.
The purposes of this symposium are for participants from Taiwan, Korea, Mongolia and Japan not only to share the information on home care of patients with ALS but to exchange opinions on support of ALS patients. The detailed information is as follows:

Place: Conference Room, Soshikan Building, Kinugasa Campus, Ritsumeikan University

Host: Global COE Program for Ars Vivendi at Ritsumeikan University,/ Research Center for Ars Vivendi, Ritsumeikan University.
Co-host: Japan ALS Association

The host of this symposium, Global COE Program for Ars Vivendi at Ritsumeikan University, was recognized by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT) as one of the programs to be supported form excellent educational and research base worldwide. The program has developed various kinds of research projects in order to support the existence of patients with ALS and develop their lives and it has also worked closely with Japan ALS Association. This symposium is a part of the sub-project called "Research on Establishment of Network for Patients with Rare Diseases in East Asia" and is also the first collaborative event with Japan ALS Association on support of patients with ALS in East Asia (from fiscal 2008 to 2010).
"Ars Vivendi", proposed by the Global COE program at Ritsumeikan University, focuses not only on disease, disability, aging but on experiences, knowledge and techniques of the involved persons who have experienced various differences and changes of their bodies and try to link these to studies and businesses from the viewpoint of the involved persons. In this symposium, the COE program will aim to seek the terms to support the existence of patients with ALS from the viewpoint of the involved persons.
