Over Prenatal Diagnosis

Global COE Program for Ars Vivendi in 2008
July 12, 2008 (Sat) Soshikan Building 303/304 Ritsumeikan University

With development of science and medical technology, it bacomes natural that we use the technology that enables us to judge whether a fetus in a gravid period has any disabilities. It will also raise an issue of how we should think about the successive threads of "intervention in body of a fetus with disabilities" based on such things as embryo-stem-cell research and ips cell research.

Is it possible to say that disbilities should not be in a priori? If not, what kinds of sensibility of the world make us hesitate to say so? We will invite two persons who have tenaciously fought with the theme of eugenic thoughts and ask them to have reports and comments. We hope you will deepen your understanding of thoughts of prenatal diagnosis.
