"Women's Autonomous Cultural Scenes: Media, Space, and Activism": The 5th lecture
memorandum (some part of lecture contents)


The theme of this lecture was "Current feminist activists of Color in DIY culture/Independent music scene". Here are the contents lined up in the order of my mentioning in the lecture.

(1)Brown & Proud Press[https://twitter.com/bppzines]
“Brown & Proud Press is a writing collective of people of color based out of Chicago.”
They had a stall in Chicago Zine Fest 2017.[https://twitter.com/monicatea2/status/860963397646647297]
Their activities are important for the enlightenment of POC (WOC) zines.
Moreover, they contributed to practices of providing diversity of the zine fest.

(2)DIY Cultures 2017[http://diycultures.tumblr.com/]
“DIY Cultures is an annual day festival exploring intersections of art and activism, running since 2013. The programme consists of a zine fair, exhibitions, workshops, contemporary craft, panel discussions, comic illustration, video art and digital animation exploring DIY practice.[…]The event distinguishes itself by its commitment to Black and people of colour empowerment and centralising marginalised histories and subcultures such as decolonalising initiatives, diaspora stories, prisoner solidarity, radical mental health and Muslim communities under the War on terror”
I emphasized the significance of this event and the activity of the co-founder OOMK[http://oomk.net/]. DIY Cultures is not just a zine fair. That expresses definitely the political nature.
In 2017 program, there were some sessions dealing with current political issues in the U.K. In addition, the guest speaker of the closing talk of 2017 festival was a activist woman fighting against racism.

“A three-day London festival by and for punx of colour. 2-4 June 2017”
“We want to celebrate the Diaspora Punx that are creating right now, acknowledge our elders and the doors the opened for us, and make room for more DIY Diaspora Punx to take centre stage and make noise.”
This activity also has the meaning as a problem presentation to DIY culture and an agitation for a reform of that as with "DIY Cultures".
Though never explicitly stated, this activity seems to be organized mainly by women.

I noticed the information the volunteer application.
This activity is a notable example of the expansion of the riot grrrl spirit in today's Asia.

(5)Lady Fast Vol.2 by Kolektif Betina[https://www.facebook.com/betinakolektif/]
This activity is also a notable example of the expansion of the DIY feminist spirit in today's Asia. The venue was filled with zines, craft products, music (live), and some workshops. That is the fruit of efforts to make a safer space and make an issue of sexism by organizer and participants.

We confirmed the manner of the address "Girls to the Front" through movies. That has served as a model of approach to protect the security and self-esteem of girls in a live show venue.

(7)Princess Nokia[http://princessnokia.org/]
She sings to oneself involuntarily "Rebel Girl" (Bikini Kill), and moreover quotes the address "Girls to the Front" and sings like speaking to girls in a live show venue.
The most important aspect is that she has a clear sense of identity as a POC feminist. It is reflected in her works, performances, and statements.
Therefore, she is not just a Riot Grrrl follower/heir. It is possible to evaluate her as a new generation feminist artist with potential of making an epoch-making innovation.
