5) Mr. Masayuki Yasuda, our student, has stayed at the University of
Leeds since April 1. The following is the brief report written
by him.

I have conducted my research in the School of Sociology and Social
Policy at the University of Leeds as a non-degree postgraduate
research student since April 1, 2011.

The main purpose of this visit is doing practical research about
disability equality training(DET) in the UK for one year.

The Japanese government is currently preparing to ratify
the "Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities" and
enact legislation against disability discrimination. Once the
regulation is enacted, Japanese society will be required to
have more practical methods for promoting disability equality,
especially by disabled people themselves, through such models as
DET. I would like to suggest a theoretical and practical model for
promoting disability equality in Japanese society based on my
findings in the UK. I hope the result of my research will be to
create innovative practical activities, especially for promoting
equality of education, employment, and independent living of
disabled people in Japan.

Finally, I am very proud that I conduct my research at the School,
which has been conducting pioneering research in the field of
disability studies.

Masayuki Yasuda
