Abstract:
In this study we analyzed a support-setting to increase QOL for the elderly with dementia of Alzheimer Type in a day-service facility. QOL in this study was defined as the degree of availability of the choice-making behavior conducted either by a participant alone or with support by the staff of the facility. The purpose of the present study was examined whether activities, negative behaviors, and costs by intervention were affected by the opportunity of choice making offered for participants. We used a design that combined ABAB with multi-baseline design. After baseline sessions, each individual was given several choices that were possible to get some reinforcement. The rate of activities was increased in sessions in which choice-making was allowed, compared to baseline sessions without the choice-opportunity. The results were discussed about the effect of the opportunity of the choice-making and the social validation of this research by the staff that intervened in choice-making.
