Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to analyze the change of "personality" desired by employers especially
in 1990's. It has been said that employers put much faith in "personality" as a main standard in
recruiting new university graduates. Today, the changes in the transition process from school to
work in Japan draw attention among researchers. The changes have happened also in the labor
market for new university graduates, and those changes are not only quantitative but qualitative. In
fact, "personality" desired by employers has been changed. This change influences the concept and
the ways of career guidance by universities. But the tendency has not been changed that employers
think "personality" is more important than "expert knowledge" or "language skills."
The analysis of the "personality" desired by employers shows what has and has not been changed
in the labor market for new university graduates and in the transition process from school to work
during 1990's Japan.
