12TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY FOR DISABILITY STUDIES

1999 Conference Theme: "Disability Across the Disciplines"
Program Organizers: Phyllis Rubenfeld (Hunter College), Barbara Altman
(Agency for Health Care Policy and Research), Barbara Robertson (University
of Illinois at Chicago)
The Society for Disability Studies will hold its 12th annual meeting at the
Crystal City DoubleTree Hotel in Arlington, Virginia on June 17-20, 1999.
SDS is a nonprofit educational organization established to promote the
understanding of the ways that disciplines, policies, and cultural
representations structure ideas about disability and have a direct impact
on the freedoms of disabled people. This announcement solicits abstracts
for individual paper presentations, panels, workshops, roundtables, or
performances on a wide range of topics and approaches to work in disability
studies.
This year's conference theme, "Disability Across the Disciplines", seeks to
expand the sophistication and insight of current disability studies models.
Specifically, proposers are asked to consider questions of methodology in
their abstracts. How can the disability studies paradigm transform the
knowledge base in more traditional disciplines? How can models currently
being applied in other disciplines inform and complicate work in disability
studies? What areas of investigation have been overlooked or devalued by
disability studies? This year's meeting will feature a number of
disciplinary focus sessions that will be devoted to analyzing the
relationship of disability studies to other areas of research and
investigation. Possible disciplinary focus sessions include: psychology,
political science, occupational therapy, literature, history, bioethics,
special education, sociology, and medicine.
The theme is intended to provide only one basis of criteria for
submissions. Because one of the organization's primary objectives is to
promote interdisciplinary scholarship, we are particularly interested in
other proposals that address an array of cross-disability issues such as:
disability policy and politics, disability rights movements, images of
people with disabilities in media, disability culture(s), the relationship
of disability to other ethnic/minority identities, health and medical
industry reform, participatory political action models, cultural responses
to disability, artistic representations of disability, social and
individual implication of disability technologies, theories of bodily and
cognitive norms/deviancy, disability and ethics, disability and the global
economy, etc.
The submission deadline is December 11, 1998. To have your proposal
considered, please complete the attached form.
